Haraldur Þorleifsson Receives The ÖBÍ Encouragement Award

The President of Iceland, Guðni Th. Jóhannesson, awarded Haraldur Þorleifsson the 2021 ÖBÍ Encouragement Award at a ceremony on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

Haraldur receives the award for the project Ramp Up Reykjavík.

The idea for the project came to Haraldur when he was sitting in a wheelchair outside a store in Reykjavík, while his family was inside. There was a single flight of stairs between them. This single flight of stairs was enough to prevent Haraldur and his family from entering.

He initially set a goal of building 100 ramps in Reykjavík in one year. That goal was achieved in 8 months, and now he has set his sights even higher, one thousand ramps across the country.
