The award is given yearly to recipient who has with their actions changed the attitudes and lives of their fellow citizens for the better.

Haraldur Þorleifsson, known as Halli, has garnered multiple Person of the Year Awards from various Icelandic media outlets, including from national broadcaster RÚV, Morgunblaðið, and Vísir.

The award given for the first time by the Icelandic Human Rights Institute.

The medal is given for his work in the fields of innovation and philanthropy.

The President of Iceland, Guðni Th. Jóhannesson, awarded Haraldur Þorleifsson the 2021 ÖBÍ Encouragement Award at a ceremony on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
